Inflows into the Krishna have risen sharply after rain in upstream areas, and barrage gates at Vijayawada have been lifted to release water downstream.
Residents of low-lying colonies along the river have been alerted and relief camps set up. Fishermen have been told not to venture into the river.
The Collector said the situation is being monitored round the clock from a control room.
